Transcutaneous (through the skin) Electrical Nerve Stimulation, known as TENS, is a non-invasive therapy used to relieve pain. Unlike strong pain medication, TENS therapy does not cause nausea, drowsiness or lead to dependence on medicine.
TENS works by applying a gentle electrical current through the skin, to nerves at or near the painful area. The electrical impulses initially block the transmission of pain signals to the brain and subsequently replace the painful sensations with a tingling feeling. TENS therapy relieves acute and chronic pain, soothes fatigue in congested limbs and improves blood circulation in treated areas.
